Garden gates and side gates in Dublin.
Garden gates and side gates for Dublin houses, made to the size of your opening in timber, composite or metal and hung on posts set for the weight. A side gate is often the one barrier between the road and your back garden, so it has to close properly, latch every time and still swing freely years from now.

A gate fails at its post long before the gate itself wears out, so the post matters as much as the gate.
We make and hang side and garden gates in Dublin, single or double, with galvanised hinges, latch and drop bolt, on posts concreted into the ground.
We measure the opening for free and send a written quote within 48 hours.

Side gates on Dublin semis and terraces.
The typical Dublin side gate closes the passage between the side wall of a semi and the boundary with next door. It is the way the bins go out, the way bikes come in, and for a lot of houses it is the only way into the back garden without walking through the house. It gets opened several times a day, slammed in the wind and leaned on, and a gate that drops, sticks or will not latch soon becomes a daily irritation.
Most of the trouble with an old side gate comes from the post on the hinge side. A gate hangs off one edge, so the weight pulls that post forward at the top. If it was only set as deep as a fence post, it leans, the gate drops at the latch end and starts dragging on the ground. When we fit a new gate, the hinge post is set for the gate's weight, which is more than a fence post ever carries, and concreted at least 600mm down.
Garden gates in Dublin: timber, composite or metal.
Timber is the usual choice, and it can be built to match a closeboard or panel fence so the gate sits in the run without standing out. It takes a coat of treatment or stain before we leave, in the colour you pick. Composite gates suit a garden that already has composite fencing, and they need no staining. Metal gates are slimmer and give a more open look, which some people prefer for a front garden.
Every gate is made to the opening instead of bought to a standard size and packed out. Dublin openings are rarely square. Walls lean a little, ground slopes across the passage, and the gap at the top is often different from the gap at the bottom. Measuring and building to the actual opening is what makes a gate close cleanly.

Single or double, and which way it opens.
A single gate is right for most side passages. A wider opening into a garden, for a ride-on mower, a skip bag or a trailer, may suit a pair of gates instead, so neither leaf is too heavy to hang well. A double gate gets a drop bolt on one leaf to hold it shut and a centre stop where the two leaves meet, so they close in line and cannot swing through.
Which way the gate opens is worth settling on the visit. Into the garden is the norm, but a slope, a step or a downpipe in the passage can decide it for you. We check the swing against everything in its path before we price it.

Fitting a gate into an existing fence.
Often the fence is staying and only the gate is new. In that case we take out the old gate and any posts that have failed, set new posts in concrete, and hang the new gate between them, tying it into the fence on each side. Where the gate closes against the house wall, the latch side has to be worked out against what that wall allows, and we go through it on the visit.
Where the whole boundary is being replaced, the gate is priced in with the new fence so the two match in style and height. The old gate, posts and concrete are taken away with the rest.

- First01.
Measure the opening.
Top, middle and bottom, both sides, plus the slope across the passage and anything in the way of the swing. This costs nothing.
- Then02.
Quote in writing.
Within 48 hours, naming the material, single or double, the hardware and whether new posts are included.

Posts and hanging.
Any old gate and failing posts come out, new posts are concreted in, and the gate is hung, levelled and adjusted.
- Last04.
Finish.
A timber gate gets its treatment or stain, the latch and bolt are checked, the old gate is taken away, and you get before and after photos.
Where we draw the line.
This page covers side gates and garden gates at houses. Gate automation and electric openers are fitted by specialist installers, not by us. We do not build brick or block piers; a gate that needs a new pier to hang on is landscaping work, quoted separately. Where a new gate goes into a boundary over two metres high, planning permission usually comes into it, and we will raise that before pricing. If the boundary the gate sits on is shared and the line is in doubt, that is for you and your neighbour to agree first.

Why does my side gate keep dropping and dragging on the ground?
Almost always the hinge post is leaning, or rotting at the ground, so the gate sags at the latch end. Adjusting the hinges helps for a few weeks at most. The fix is a post set deeper and in concrete, sized for the weight of the gate.
Can you make a gate for an opening that is not square?
Yes. Every gate is made to the measured opening, so a wall that leans or ground that slopes across the passage is built into the gate rather than left as a gap.
Can a new gate match my existing fence?
Usually, yes. A timber gate can be built in closeboard or to suit a panel fence, and stained to match. If the fence is composite, a composite gate keeps the run consistent.
Should my side gate open in or out?
Into the garden in most cases, but a step, a slope or a downpipe in the passage can make the other way better. We check the swing on the visit before we quote.
