Roofs in Kildare

The Kildare housing stock has a shape to it. The commuter towns along the M4 and the N7, Leixlip, Celbridge, Maynooth, Kilcock, Clane, Naas, Sallins and Newbridge, grew fast through the nineties and two-thousands, and most of that growth is estates of two-storey semis and terraces roofed in concrete interlocking tiles or fibre-cement slates. Those roofs are now at the age where the first things go: mortar on the ridges and verges cracks and falls out, felt at the eaves rots where it sat in the gutter, and the odd tile cracked during a satellite dish install finally lets water in.

The older towns have older roofs. Naas, Kildare town, Athy, Monasterevin and the villages around them have terraces and older houses under natural slate, with the same nail-sickness and slipped slates that any slate roof of that age gets. Out in the country there are farmhouses and cottages with slate on one side and a later tile or sheet extension on the other, and the junction between the two is where they leak.
