Roofs in Wicklow
The coast is the busy end. Bray, Greystones, Delgany, Kilcoole, Newcastle, Wicklow town, Rathnew and Arklow carry most of the county's housing, and most of the repair calls. Along that strip the roofs take the wind off the sea head-on, and a ridge tile or a verge that would sit tight for decades in a Dublin suburb loosens in a couple of winters here. Salt in the air is hard on galvanised fixings and on any lead that was not dressed properly; corners lift, nails rust early, and the slates they held slide.
The older seaside terraces in Bray and Wicklow town and the Victorian villas around Greystones are natural slate, often with cast iron gutters and tall chimneys that get the full force of an easterly. The estates built around those towns from the nineties on are concrete tile and fibre-cement slate, and they are now at the age where the ridge mortar, the verges and the eaves felt start going.
Inland it changes. Blessington, Baltinglass, Dunlavin, Rathdrum, Aughrim and the villages in the hills have more older houses, farmhouses and cottages, mostly slate, often with a later extension in tile or sheeting. Those roofs get the weather off the mountains rather than the sea, which means driven rain from the west and south-west finding every gap at a valley or a flashing.

Exposed sites are quoted with the right access. A two-storey coastal house in a wind needs a tower or a scaffold rather than a ladder, and that is in the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
After a storm
Wicklow gets the weather warnings first, and the calls come the morning after. If you have lost slates or a ridge overnight, ring early, send a photo from the ground of the damage and of anything lying in the garden, and say whether water is coming in. Active leaks go first. Where the full repair has to wait for the wind to drop, we make the roof watertight and come back to finish it properly in dry weather.
Keep the fallen slates or tiles if they are in one piece; on an older roof a matching slate is worth having and it saves sourcing a reclaimed one.
How it goes
- Ring, especially after a storm. Say where you are in the county and whether water is coming in. A photo of the roof from the road, and of anything that came off it, helps us arrive with the right slates or tiles.
- A look from the ladder and a written price. Same week on most calls, no charge for the look. Access for an exposed two-storey site is in the quote, and the quote follows within 48 hours.
- The repair. Most Wicklow repair calls are done in a half day to a full day. Storm jobs are made safe first and finished when the weather allows; chimney and valley work on an exposed house takes longer and the quote says so.
- Photos and the gutters cleared. Before and after photos from the same spot the same day, and whatever the storm left in the gutters cleared on the way down.
What we do not do
We repair roofs in Wicklow; we do not strip and replace them. A slate roof that is losing slates across every slope each winter is nail-sick and needs re-slating, and we will show you the photos and say so rather than patch it. Farm sheds, sheeting and commercial roofs are not something we take on; houses, extensions, garages and outbuildings are.

How soon can you get to storm damage in Wicklow?
Ring first thing and say whether water is coming in. Active leaks go to the front of the week, same day where we have a slot and the next working day at the latest. We make the roof watertight first if the full repair has to wait for the wind to drop.
My ridge tiles keep blowing off. Can that be stopped?
Yes. On an exposed Wicklow roof, mortar bedding on its own will keep failing. A dry ridge system fixes each ridge tile mechanically to a ventilated roll, so there is no mortar to crack and nothing for the wind to lift. It costs more than repointing and it does not need doing again.
