Garden maintenance in Wicklow.
Garden maintenance across County Wicklow, on the coast at Bray, Greystones, Wicklow town and Arklow and inland in the hills, kept to a written schedule by the same crew on the same day each cycle. For anyone looking for a gardener in Wicklow for a house they live in, let out or only visit at weekends, the arrangement is the same.

Wicklow gardens deal with salt wind on the coast, steep ground inland and a mild, wet climate that keeps grass growing for much of the year.
We look after them on a fortnightly, monthly or seasonal schedule at a fixed price per visit or per month, with a short note and photos after every visit for owners who are not there to see it.
The walk-around costs nothing, and you have the schedule and price in writing within 48 hours.

Coastal gardens and salt wind.
From Bray down through Greystones, Kilcoole, Wicklow town and Arklow, gardens face the Irish Sea, and an easterly gale carries salt spray well inland. After a winter storm you can see it on the hedges: the sea-facing side browned and crisp, the sheltered side still green. Griselinia and escallonia, both common along this coast, put up with it better than most, which is why so many seaside gardens are hedged with them.
A coastal schedule allows for that. Hedges are trimmed so the scorched growth comes off once the weather settles, rather than straight after the storm when more may be coming. Shrubs that have been rocked loose are checked and cut back, and the debris a gale leaves on the lawn and in the beds is cleared on the next visit. Tall, soft growth in exposed beds is better pruned in autumn, before the winter wind does it for you.
Sloping and hillside gardens inland.
Away from the coast the ground rises fast. Around Enniskerry, Roundwood, Rathdrum, Aughrim and the edges of Blessington, houses are often built into a slope, and the garden comes as a series of levels, banks and steps rather than one flat lawn.
That changes how the work is done. A bank too steep to mow safely is strimmed instead. The mower may have to be carried up steps to reach a top lawn. Beds on a slope lose soil in heavy rain and need more weeding at the bottom edge. None of this is unusual for a Wicklow garden, but it takes longer than the same area on the flat, and the walk-around is where we see it and price it in.
Garden maintenance in Wicklow's mild, wet climate.
Wicklow gets plenty of rain, and the coast rarely sits frozen for long. Grass keeps growing slowly through much of the winter in a mild spell, so a garden left from October to March can come out of it with a lawn that is long, wet and hard to cut back cleanly.
For that reason most Wicklow schedules keep a monthly visit going through the winter rather than stopping. Moss is common in shaded, damp lawns under trees, and leaf fall from the wooded valleys can be heavy in autumn, so the October and November visits lean towards clearing leaves off the lawn and out of the beds. From spring to autumn, fortnightly suits most family gardens, and weekly can make sense for a big garden with long hedges.

Holiday homes and rental properties.
Plenty of houses in Wicklow are not lived in all year round. There are holiday homes owned by people in Dublin or further away, houses let to tenants, and family places that are used at weekends and in summer. The garden at a house like that tends to get looked at only when somebody arrives, which is usually too late.
We work to the schedule whether anyone is home or not. A side gate code or an unlocked gate on the day is enough. After each visit a short note and photos go to the owner, so a landlord in Dublin or an owner abroad can see that the lawn was cut and the hedge done without driving down. If the house is being got ready for guests or a new tenant, tell us the date and we can line a visit up with it.

Where we draw the line.
We maintain gardens in Wicklow; tree surgery beyond hedges and small trees is not something we take on, and nor are the feed-and-weed programmes run by specialist lawn firms. Large estates and grounds that need a ride-on and a team are outside what we are set up for. Gardens that have been let go are given a one-off tidy, quoted separately, before a schedule starts, and a lawn past saving is quoted as a new lawn under landscaping.

Can you look after the garden at my holiday home in Wicklow?
Yes. We keep to the schedule whether you are there or not, and you get a note and photos after each visit so you know what was done.
Do I need to be home for the visits?
No. We need to be able to get into the garden, which usually means a gate code or a side gate left unlocked on the day.
Should I keep visits going over winter in Wicklow?
Usually, yes, at least monthly. Grass grows slowly in mild spells, and leaves and storm debris build up. A garden left all winter is a bigger job in March.
My hedge is brown on the side facing the sea. Is it dead?
Usually not. Salt wind scorches the outer leaves on the exposed face. Once the weather settles, a trim takes off the damaged growth and the hedge fills in again through spring.
Can you cut a steep bank in the garden?
Yes, with a strimmer where it is too steep to mow safely. Slopes take longer than flat ground, and that is allowed for in the price.
